The use and storage of waste glass in a process under an IPC authorisation - paragraph 1 exemption

A paragraph 1 exemption allows the use, under an authorisation granted under the Industrial Pollution Control Order, of waste glass as part of a process within Part B of section 3.5 (glass manufacture and production) of Schedule 1 of The Industrial Pollution Control (Prescribed Processes and Substances) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1998

Waste glass

Quantity

The total quantity of waste glass used in the process must not exceed 600,000 tonnes in any period of twelve months.

Storage and location

Storage must be at the place where the manufacturing process is carried on. There is no limit to the amount of waste glass that can be stored.

Additional conditions

The process must be authorised under an authorisation granted under the Industrial Pollution Control (Northern Ireland) Order of 1997 for waste glass as part of a process which includes processes authorised by Part B of section 3.5 (glass manufacture and production) of Schedule 1 of the Industrial Pollution Control (Prescribed Processes and Substances) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1998(a) as follows:

  • manufacture of glass at any location with the capacity to make 5000 tonnes or more of glass in any 12 month period and any process involving the use of glass which is carried out at the location in conjunction with its manufacture.
  • manufacture of glass where the use of lead or any lead compound is involved.

The relevant IPC authorisation must be submitted with the Paragraph 1 exemption application. If you do not already have this authorisation, you must contact the Industrial Pollution and Radiochemical Inspectorate of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.
