Sights and sounds
There are around 80 islands in Lough Neagh which are managed as part of the Lough Neagh National Nature Reserve.
These islands are important for providing secure nesting sites for wetland birds in order to protect them from predators such as foxes, rats, mink as well as noises from visitors, passers-by and dogs.
Populations of breeding birds are monitored every year and on the islands as a whole about 500 pairs of mallard, 300 tufted duck, 500 great crested grebes, 30,000 black-headed gulls, 150 common terns and 60 mute swans nest have been recorded.
