Glencrewan is situated at a high altitude and has a limestone rock substratum. This results in the water being alkaline and rich in minerals, which leads to high productivity of invertebrates in the water. As a result, this venue offers excellent mayfly fishing opportunities and one can catch large trout here due to the rich feeding. However, during long periods of dry weather, the lake reduces its area significantly and may not be fishable.

The presence of Zebra Mussels is still preventing the stocking of fish from Movanagher Fish Farm. For more information, please visit Zebra Mussels and impact on fish stocking in the Public Angling Estate.
