This short stretch of canal fishes best during periods of high water levels when bream and roach move in from the River Bann for shelter. Pike follow these shoals of coarse fish. Numerous perch can be caught close to the lock gates. Beware of the strong current and deep water where the canal enters the River Bann. Fishing at Portna is restricted to the stretch below the locks. Upstream of the locks is inaccessible and dangerous due to the rocky banks.
